Bloodsucking the Fisherfolks

Officials consider user fee for dike

Samuel Batiste estimates he's driven round-trip from Pasadena to the Texas City Dike a couple times a week for nearly 18 years.

“It wouldn’t be worth the money, even if all they charged me was a couple of bucks,” Batiste said while attempting to cast a line into the water Monday afternoon. “Why would I want to pay to come out here when there are so many other places I can go for free?”

What is it that local authorities feel they must charge to access a few choice fishing spots. The Tesac City Dike is a 5 mile mile stretctch that goes out into Galveston Bay, there is a couple small beaches where people can wade out and bathe and fish. Its nice, but to charge people to use it is silly. there are other places to go, and to charge will cause another very nice place to be underutilized. Many of the people that go here are not wealthy and families with small children aften find a nice place to go and get in a little fishing.

I went and met up with a few buddies at Seawolf park, a couple of weeks ago. They wanted $5.00 to park and $5.00 for each person to fish. What a rip off! Its not like they have supplied outstanding facilities and services. The bulkhead is very slippery, and someone has to pay for the guy to check the wristbands and make sure that all the fisherfolk paid up.
