Galveston Hosts Louisianna Refugees

Some of the folks who evavacuated Louisiana found refuge in Galveston. There stay here may be longer than they expected or or prepared for. Unlike the Baytown Comfort Inn some hotels are giving breaks for those from Louisiana.

As Hurricane Katrina whipped and lashed Louisiana on Monday, it also kicked up an unexpected gust of tourism here.

Storm refugees poured into hotels or sought shelter with families as thousands more prepare to arrive on the island to board cruise ships that were supposed to sail from New Orleans.

Profiting from another city’s catastrophe is a delicate proposition. Done in the wrong way, and businesses can seem crass or insensitive.

In a city that has seen its share of devastating storms, few wanted to appear to be taking advantage. With that in mind, some island hotels were reducing prices out of sympathy for other coastal dwellers.

Still, Katrina evacuees, who didn’t know on Monday what had become of their homes, friends and co-workers, were welcoming diversions as they waited for the storm to subside and a chance to return to their homes.

The folks we have seen don't appear to be happy go lucky vacationers, but rather shell shocked and stunned.
Update:
Houston is making the refugeees more comfortable
