Revolt of the Eggheads

The Mier's nomination, and her subsquent withdrawel, represents a revolt within the Republican party. Raw thinks of it as RAW360: Revolt of the Eggheads Maybe, but I believe these are reluctant rebels.
Much has been talked about with Miers, so I don't feel the need to waste our time on rehashing what has been said elsewhere. It's apparent, to me, that Miers was a poor pick. Easy to say now, of course, but any time a nominee has to step aside before it even begins due to objections within your stable, it's pretty tough to put forth face-saving spin. I was never particularly excited about Miers and as the opposition to the nomination mounted, I found myself agreeing with it. At the same time, though, while I found Miers uninspiring and a poor pick, she was nowhere near worthy of the multitude of attacks heaped on her.

It's all quite astonishing, really, until you consider that it was never really about Miers at all.

It has not been a particularly easy time to be a Republican. One by one, many of us have looked back at the Administration that we are defending and realizing that only are we finding ourselves defending the indefensible, we're defending much of what we're here to attack.

Although, RAW seems to believe this rebelian was about philisophical and intellectual principles, I think think the Miers revolt is the tip of a huge iceburg. To me it was all about integrity, and total disgust with GWB's cronyism. To present Miers as the best there is was a slap in the face at those who voted for a presidency that was supposed to be an administration that has integrity. Even Clinton didn't try to get one of his long time budies into the Supreme Court. The Republicans are supposed to be better than that. Bush's adminstration is not the root of the problem, nor the best example of the what the the Republicans are becoming. To see what the Republicans have become, one needs to look at the Legislature. The supposedly conservative Tom DeLay proclaims that there is no fat to cut on the budget. Kay Baily Hutchenson intends to run for a third term when she campained for her first term to be a 2 term Senator only. The Republic led Senate is resisting cost cutting introduced by Senator Coburn. Voters know that Democrats wouldn't be any better, but they are starting to have difficulty supporting Republicans who aren't delivering on what we expect from them. If we critisize Republicans we give Democrats more ammunition, if we remain quiet nothing will ever improve. Pogo said it best. " We have met the enemy, and he is us."
