Kappa Weekend 2006

Comming home from work today I noticed piles of road barriers staged at the side of the road and in the median on 61st Street. A sure sign that another Kappa Weekend is about to arrive. The barriers are Galvestons way of making the visitors feel welcome. Blocking roads and limmiting access is our way of way of accepting 100,000 visitors and moving traffic! The shutting down of bussinesses is the topper making everyone, visitor and residents, even more miserable. One surely must wonder if it was a primarly white folks weekend if everyone would as hospitable. Never the less, the partyers I'm sure will have a great time, and the great Texas Beach Party will surely be a success. The weekend will be from April 21 -23.

My in-laws live on the island. They have a huge pictue window that looks over the street. Every year during Kappa weekend, without fail, someone shoots it out. There is never an arrest made, but a police report is always filed. My sister-in-law was right next to the window last year, and the bullet zipped right by her ear.

You wonder why people don't embrace the crowd? Traffic, disrespect for other people's property, and noise all might have something to do with it.

beach party weekend. no longer "kappa weekend" since kappa will have nothing to do with something with such a bad reputation.

it's ridiculous. it's an excuse for kids to come down and act unruley and disrespectful to those of us who actually live here year-round.

of course the streets are blocked! we can't stop them from coming, and certainly the businesses that stay open do well, but we don't want them wandering drunk and stupid in our neighborhoods - where our children play (yet untouched by such disgusting behavior).

residents are willing to put up with road blocks for a tiny bit of security. most of us don't go out anyway.

they're actually shutting the walmart down at night; every year since that unfortunate looting incident.

anyway, i plan on being locked away until monday when i'm sure all these stereotype-fitting punks will be gone.

This whole thing about us being racist if we stop this event is insane. What it is... a waste of tax payers money & is far from racism. I am all for stoping Mardi Gras because of the lewd behavior & that is mainly white people. It comes down to respect, as far as people saying that these are college kids blowing off steam, how many college kids to you know that drive Hummers & Bentley's or perform lewd acts in public?

All night this weekend until 3am I had to listen to thumping car radios that went in a private neighborhood that is off the Beach Weekend track. If you look at the web sites that they have, the filth that these "innocent kids" are doing is disrespectful not only to people that visit, but us as well. Why is it fair that we have to be kept from driving our streets when we pay astronomical property taxes? Do we not have a voice about how we feel about this waste of taxpayer money?

Word of this event has even reached the U.K.

I use to live on the Island and moved away a few years ago. I will be returning with my family and I really hope to be involved with some changes surrounding Black Beach Week. I believe you need to offer structure to avoid chaos. I think Galveston can reform and pull off a great weekend as long as we remain in charge. I believe Galveston needs to make a parental stand and help keep the kids entertained and discipline those who refuse to cooperate.
