Pesos in America

I must admit I'm a little surprised at the ruckus raised by Pizza Patron and Value Giant accepting the Mexican peso for payment of goods. I was raised about 300 miles from the Canadian Border. and the Canadians near the border would accept American dollars and many stores and American shops would take Canadian money. It was never a big deal. I've traveled a bit over the world, and typically its never been a problem spending American dollars in larger stores in almost any country. The Border towns in Mexico use the American dollar as if it were the local currency. The malls in the border towns, and in Houston itself, are seeing boom times because the Latin American and Mexican affluent shoppers. If its OK, that the American dollar is accepted everywhere, and We accept the Canadian dollar on a routine basis. Could it be that racism is behind the objections to accept the Mexican peso?

I don't think its racism, but rather that well-touted and misplaced "911" fear. I don't know what pesos have to do with 911, anymore than sterling, dinars lire or drachma have to do with terrorism. Though the fox-news-iasts would have you believe its denigrating the sovereignty of our currency, that is patently ridiculous, and allowing ease of using other currencies is what makes for a flow of global commerce. The major problem, as I see it, is the ease of counterfeiting foreign currencies. Who would be the ultimate losers? the merchants or the banks? If the merchants are willing to take the chance, then the "right or wrong" of it doesn't exist. Our right as free individuals to indulge in free commerce, unless we are knowingly contributing to washing money, or assisting in terror pursuits, should be sacrosanct, and our merchants must be allowed to choose who and how they deal in business, and what currencies they do or do not use.
